US Consumer Confidence Takes a Hit in January

Recent data from the University of Michigan reveals a concerning trend in US consumer confidence, with the Consumer Sentiment Index dropping by 1.1% in January to 73.2. This decline marks a significant 7.3% fall from the previous year, signaling growing unease among consumers.

Economic Conditions and Consumer Expectations

While the Current Economic Conditions Index saw a 3.7% increase from December, it wasn't enough to offset the 4.9% decrease from January 2024, settling at 77.9 points. More alarmingly, the Index of Consumer Expectations fell by 4.2% month-over-month and 8.9% year-over-year, landing at 70.2.

Inflation Expectations on the Rise

The report highlights a sharp increase in inflation expectations, with year-ahead inflation expectations jumping from 2.8% to 3.3%, the highest since May 2024. Long-run inflation expectations also rose, from 3.0% to 3.3%, marking a significant shift in consumer sentiment regarding future economic conditions.
