Vietnam's Frozen Durian Imports Skyrocket by 800% Ahead of Lunar New Year Festivities

Record-Breaking Durian Imports in Vietnam

Vietnam witnessed an unprecedented surge in frozen durian imports, reaching a record $4.2 million in December. This marks a staggering 35-fold increase compared to the same period in 2023, as per the latest customs data.

Festive Demand Drives Import Boom

The spike in imports is largely attributed to the heightened demand during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays. Food companies significantly ramped up production of premium durian cakes and candies to cater to the festive season.

The Superiority of Malaysian Durians

Dang Phuc Nguyen, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, highlighted the challenges with local durian cultivation. Vietnamese-grown Musang King durians often suffer from poor yields and inconsistent quality, leading many farmers to abandon its cultivation.

In contrast, durians imported from Malaysia boast stable quality and a rich, fragrant flavor that has won the hearts of Vietnam's affluent consumers.

Malaysian Durians Make Their Mark

Following a bilateral protocol signed in 2023, Malaysia officially began exporting Musang King durians to Vietnam. The price of a 400-gram box of frozen durian pulp has seen a nearly 40% decrease since its initial introduction, making it more accessible to a broader audience.

Local vs. Imported: A Quality Divide

While locally grown Musang King durians are available, they are typically sold as whole, fresh fruit at a lower price point. However, demand remains subdued due to their inconsistent quality compared to their Malaysian counterparts.

The Legend of Musang King

Originating from the Gua Musang area in Malaysia's Kelantan state, the Musang King durian is celebrated for its creamy texture and potent aroma. Recognizable by its oval shape, dark green skin with large spikes, and distinctive five-point star pattern at the bottom, this durian variety weighs between two to four kilograms.
