Dispute Over Alleged Trump-Xi Conversation
In a statement that has sparked widespread speculation, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Guo Jiakun firmly denied any recent phone conversation between President Xi Jinping and former U.S. President Donald Trump. This denial comes in direct contradiction to Trump's claims of discussions regarding trade and tariffs between the two nations.
Official Statements and Conflicting Reports
"As far as I know, there has been no phone call between the two heads of state recently," Guo stated, further emphasizing that China and the United States are currently not engaged in any consultations or negotiations concerning tariff issues. This statement was made in response to Trump's assertion in a Time magazine interview, where he mentioned having "made 200 deals" on tariffs and conversed with Xi.
Adding to the confusion, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed uncertainty over whether Trump had indeed spoken with the Chinese president, leaving the public and international observers in a state of ambiguity regarding the actual state of U.S.-China diplomatic communications.
