BPCL and Sembcorp Announce Groundbreaking Joint Venture for Green Energy

In a landmark move to combat climate change, state-run Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Sembcorp have announced the formation of an equal joint venture. This partnership aims to revolutionize the green hydrogen production and other renewable energy projects not only in India but globally.

Strategic Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

The joint venture will be executed through Sembcorp's wholly-owned subsidiary, Green Hydrogen India Pvt Ltd. By combining Sembcorp's extensive experience in renewables with BPCL's deep-rooted expertise in the petroleum sector and its robust infrastructure, the JV is poised to make significant strides in green energy.

Expanding the Horizon of Green Energy

Beyond green hydrogen, the collaboration will also delve into projects for green ammonia production, bunkering, and emissions reduction for port operations, among other emerging green fuel technologies. BPCL chairman G Krishnakumar emphasized the JV's alignment with India's climate goals and BPCL's ambitious 2040 net-zero target, supported by a 10 GW renewable energy portfolio.

Sembcorp's Commitment to Decarbonization

Vipul Tuli, CEO (West) of Sembcorp, highlighted the company's focus on identifying opportunities to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors. With 6GW of renewables assets in India, Sembcorp is well-equipped to facilitate large-scale, low-cost green hydrogen production, marking a significant step towards a sustainable future.
