In a promising sign for the German economy, retail sales in February showed a robust increase. According to Destatis, the country's statistical office, calendar and seasonally adjusted turnover in retail trade surged by 4.9% in real terms compared to the same month last year. This growth highlights the resilience and potential of Germany's retail sector amidst global economic uncertainties.
Monthly and Annual Performance
On a monthly basis, the turnover in retail trade saw a modest increase of 0.8%. When looking at nominal terms, the figures are even more impressive, with retail sales jumping by 5.9% year-on-year and advancing by 0.8% month-on-month.
Segment-wise Growth
The food retail sector reported a steady growth, with sales up by 0.8% month-on-month and 3.3% year-on-year in real terms. Meanwhile, the non-food retail trade also showed positive trends, adding 0.6% compared to January's figure and a significant 5.2% compared to February 2024.
