Strengthening Bilateral Trade Relations

Since the implementation of a bilateral FTA in 2021, South Korea and the UK have maintained robust trade relations, mirroring those of the Korea-European Union (EU) FTA. The ongoing enhancement negotiations, which began in 2023, seek to update and improve trade norms in light of deepening economic cooperation, investment, and trade relations, as well as to address emerging trade fields such as trade and gender equality, digital trade, and the bioeconomy.

Focus Areas of the Negotiations

The upcoming round of negotiations will delve into 13 subcommittees, focusing on critical areas such as goods agreements, supply chains, digital trade, government procurement, and the bioeconomy. A MOTIE official emphasized the importance of these talks, stating, "With increasing uncertainty in the global trade environment, strengthening cooperation between South Korea and the UK is more crucial than ever. In this round of negotiations, we will focus on improving business-friendly rules of origin, enhancing biotechnology and supply chain collaboration, and establishing digital trade regulations."
