In an unexpected turn of events, the United States witnessed a 77,000 increase in private payrolls this February, as reported by the ADP National Employment Report. This figure, however, fell short of what analysts had anticipated.

Sector-wise Job Additions

Breaking down the numbers, the goods-producing sector saw an addition of 42,000 jobs, whereas the service sector added 36,000 jobs. Interestingly, small businesses experienced a loss of 12,000 positions, contrasting with medium and large companies which added 46,000 and 37,000 jobs respectively.

Wage Growth Insights

On the wage front, there was a notable 4.7% year-on-year increase for those who remained in their jobs, and a significant 6.7% increase for those who switched jobs.

ADP's Chief Economist, Nela Richardson, pointed out, "The uncertainty in policy and a deceleration in consumer spending could have been the culprits behind the layoffs or the hiring slowdown last month. Our data, along with other recent indicators, hints at a cautious approach by employers as they navigate through the prevailing economic conditions."
