Expanding Durian Exports to China
Malaysia is setting its sights on a significant 25% increase in durian exports to China. This ambitious goal is supported by the expansion of farming land, enhanced processing facilities, and the strengthening of commercial ties, alongside targeted promotional efforts. The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority highlights these developments as key drivers behind the projected growth.
Boosting Durian Cultivation
Several Malaysian states are actively promoting durian cultivation. For instance, Kelantan has allocated 3,000 hectares specifically for Musang King durian plantations. This variety, predominantly grown in Malaysia, is highly sought after in international markets.
Impact of Import Restrictions
Recent import restrictions on fresh durians from Vietnam and Thailand to China are expected to further boost the demand for Malaysian durians. Durian farmers and exporters view these restrictions as an opportunity to expand their market share in China.
Quality Assurance Measures
Sam Tan, president of the Malaysia Durian Exporters Association, emphasizes the importance of maintaining the quality of Malaysian durians. He advocates for a policy that prohibits the pre-cutting of durians, a practice common in Thailand and Vietnam for easier transportation. Malaysian durians are allowed to ripen naturally, ensuring a chemical-free product that is highly valued in markets like China.
Record Durian Exports
In the last four months of 2024, Malaysia exported MYR24.8 million (US$5.5 million) worth of fresh durian to China, following the signing of an export protocol between the two countries in June. China's durian imports reached a record US$6.99 billion last year, with Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines being the top suppliers.
