The United Nations has voiced its concerns regarding the escalating trade restrictions and their potential detrimental effects on the global economy. Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, highlighted the particular vulnerability of developing countries and their populations during a press briefing on Monday.

Dujarric emphasized that despite the surge in trade restrictions, the majority of global trade still adheres to the rules set by the World Trade Organization. However, the current low-growth context of the global economy raises alarms about the sustainability of such measures.

Trump's Tariff Threats Escalate Tensions

Adding to the tension, U.S. President Donald Trump has recently threatened to impose tariffs on the European Union, with reports suggesting a possible 10% tariff. This comes after Trump's administration had already imposed tariffs on imports from Canada, China, and initially on Mexico, though tariffs on Mexican goods were postponed for a month.
