In a concerning turn of events, Germany's unemployment rate escalated to 6.4% in January, marking a significant 0.4 percentage point increase from the previous month, as reported by the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur fuer Arbeit).

Rising Numbers of Jobless Citizens

The data revealed that the number of unemployed individuals surged to 2,993,000, up by 186,000 from December and by 187,000 compared to January 2024. Seasonally adjusted figures also showed an 11,000 increase in unemployment month-over-month.

Underemployment Also on the Rise

Moreover, underemployment, which includes those impacted by labor market policies or temporary work incapacity, experienced a seasonally adjusted increase of 6,000, reaching a total of 3,714,000 in January 2025. This represents a 107,000 rise from the same period last year.
