IndiGo Takes Legal Action Against Mahindra Electric Over 'BE 6e' EV Name

IndiGo Files Trademark Infringement Suit

IndiGo, India's leading airline, has filed a trademark infringement suit against Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd over the naming of its upcoming electric vehicle (EV) as 'BE 6e'. The airline argues that '6E' is its flight code and a registered trademark with strong global recognition.

Mahindra's electric car, set to launch early next year, has sparked concerns from IndiGo, which claims that any unauthorized use of the '6E' mark constitutes an infringement of its rights, reputation, and goodwill. The case is currently scheduled for a hearing on December 9.

In response, Mahindra Electric stated that it has applied for trademark registration under class 12 (vehicles) for 'BE 6e' and does not see a conflict as their mark is fundamentally different from IndiGo's '6E'. The company is engaged in discussions with IndiGo to find an amicable solution.

This is not the first time IndiGo has faced a legal battle over a name associated with it. In 2015, the airline had a trademark dispute with Tata Motors over the use of the name 'IndiGo' for a sedan.
