Hyundai Motor Group Partners with IITs for Advanced Research
Hyundai Motor Group has announced a strategic partnership with three prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) - IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, and IIT Bombay. The collaboration aims to establish a Hyundai Centre of Excellence (CoE) focused on driving advancements in batteries and electrification technologies tailored to the Indian market.
The CoE, to be set up on the IIT Delhi campus, will be funded by Hyundai Motor Group, with an investment of approximately $7 million over five years from 2025 to 2029. The initiative will expand into areas such as software and hydrogen fuel cells, fostering a strong network of talented individuals and driving innovation in the automotive sector.
Hyundai Motor Group officials, including IIT Delhi director Rangan Banerjee, IIT Bombay dean Sachin C Patwardhan, and IIT Madras dean Manu Santhanam, participated in a signing ceremony at IIT Delhi to formalize the agreement.
"We are delighted to join forces with IITs, a group of leading engineering universities renowned for their exceptional education and research," said Naksup Sung, head of Hyundai Motor Group Research and Development (R&D) Planning & Coordination Centre. "Hyundai CoE will cultivate a strong network of talented individuals from India's academic landscape, driving innovation and future growth."
The collaboration will also involve the Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART) at IIT Delhi, the only EV-related research institute in India. The Hyundai CoE will facilitate technical and human exchanges between experts from Korea and India, promoting knowledge sharing and skill development.
This partnership aligns with Hyundai Motor Group's broader strategy to expand its presence in India and support the development of an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. The group believes that Hyundai CoE will play a pivotal role in strengthening not only Hyundai Motor India Limited's (HMIL) commitment to India but also in advancing research on advanced technologies and developing India-specific products.
