April Sees a Sharp Decline in Eurozone Consumer Confidence and Economic Sentiment

Eurozone Consumer Confidence Dips Further in April

According to the latest report from the European Commission, consumer confidence in the euro area has taken a hit in April, marking a continued decline from the previous month. The data, which aligns with preliminary figures released earlier, shows a decrease of 2.2 points month-over-month, bringing the index down to a worrying negative 16.7 points.

EU-Wide Economic Sentiment Also on the Decline

Not limited to the eurozone, the consumer confidence index across the European Union also fell by 2.1 points, landing at negative 16. This downturn reflects broader concerns about the economic outlook among EU citizens.

Economic and Employment Indicators Show Mixed Signals

The economic sentiment indicator didn't fare much better, dropping by 1.4 points in the euro area to 93.6, with a similar decrease observed in the EU, bringing its figure to 94.4. Meanwhile, the employment expectations index presented a mixed picture, worsening by 0.7 points in the EU to 96.9, while remaining stable in the eurozone at 96.5.
