Fugitive Diamond Merchant Mehul Choksi Fights Extradition Amid Cancer Treatment Claims

Mehul Choksi's Legal Battle and Health Concerns

Absconding diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, a key accused in the PNB scam case, was arrested in Belgium. His legal team is preparing to argue against extradition to India, citing his ongoing cancer treatment and poor health conditions.

Choksi's lawyer, Vijay Aggarwal, stated, "My client is not a flight risk and is extremely sick, undergoing cancer treatment. He also suffers from PTSD due to previous incidents."

Challenges in Extradition

Indian agencies face hurdles in extraditing Choksi, as Interpol had earlier removed a Red Notice against him. His deep financial resources and access to high-powered legal support across Europe further complicate the process.

The PNB Scam Case

Choksi, along with his nephew Nirav Modi, was involved in a massive fraud at PNB’s Brady House branch in Mumbai, leading to a wrongful loss of Rs 6,344.97 crore to the bank.

Former Managing Director of Choksi's Gitanjali Gems, Santosh Srivastava, welcomed his arrest, hoping for a speedy recovery of the defrauded money.
