General Motors Slashes Electric Van Production in Canada Amid Market Demand Shifts

Production Cuts at CAMI Assembly Plant

In a significant move, General Motors announced on Friday the reduction of BrightDrop electric delivery van production at its CAMI assembly plant in Ontario, Canada. The decision, attributed to "market demand and re-balancing inventory," marks a pivotal shift in the automaker's electric vehicle strategy.

Impact on Workforce and Operations

The automaker plans to transition the plant from two shifts to one, resulting in the loss of 500 jobs. Furthermore, operations at the facility will be suspended for 20 weeks starting in May, with battery pack assembly halting for two weeks in April. Despite these changes, GM reassured that "Production of BrightDrop and EV battery assembly will remain at CAMI," emphasizing its continued commitment to electric vehicle production at the site.

Clarification on Tariffs

GM has clarified that these operational adjustments are unrelated to the tariffs imposed by United States President Donald Trump, distancing the decision from political influences.
