Scania's Strategic Move into Battery Technology
In a significant step towards electrifying heavy industry, Volkswagen AG's Scania has announced the acquisition of Northvolt Systems Industrial unit. This deal includes production facilities, a data and research center, and brings nearly 260 employees into Scania's fold.
A Partnership for Electrified Solutions
The acquired business is set to partner with Scania Power Solutions, operating as an independent venture under Scania Ventures and New Business. While financial details remain undisclosed, the move is a clear indicator of Scania's commitment to sustainable, electrified solutions for off-road applications.
Expertise in Battery Technology
"Northvolt Systems Industrial Division brings valuable expertise in battery technology and assembly. Their capabilities strengthen our modular approach and support the development of complete electrified solutions for off-road applications. I’m pleased to welcome the team to Scania," said Sara Hermansson, head of Scania Power Solutions.
Northvolt's Financial Struggles
This acquisition comes after Northvolt faced financial difficulties, filing for bankruptcy in Sweden in March and seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States as part of its debt restructuring efforts.
