EU Strengthens Energy Security with Two-Year Extension of Gas Storage Regulations

EU Approves Extension of Gas Storage Rules

The European Commission has given its nod to extend the current gas storage regulations for an additional two years, a move aimed at bolstering energy security across the bloc and protecting it from the whims of volatile market conditions.

Flexibility for Member States

Under the Council's mandate, the 90% gas storage filling target before winter remains, but with added flexibility for member states. This includes extending the deadline from October 1 to December 1, making interim targets indicative, and permitting deviations of up to 10% during adverse market conditions.

Provisions for Persistent Disruptions

The European Commission retains the authority to authorize further deviations in cases of persistent disruptions, ensuring that the bloc's energy supply remains secure even in the face of prolonged challenges.
