EU Strengthens Energy Security with Two-Year Extension of Gas Storage Regulations

EU Approves Extension of Gas Storage Rules to Boost Energy Security

The European Commission has given the green light to extend current gas storage regulations by two years, a move aimed at enhancing the bloc's energy security and protecting it from unpredictable market fluctuations.

Flexibility and Security at the Forefront

Under the new mandate, the EU will maintain its ambitious 90% gas storage filling target before the winter season. However, member states will enjoy increased flexibility, including an extended deadline from October 1 to December 1, making interim targets indicative rather than mandatory, and allowing for deviations of up to 10% in the face of adverse market conditions.

Adapting to Market Disruptions

The European Commission has also reserved the right to authorize further deviations in cases of persistent market disruptions, ensuring that the bloc can adapt to any challenges that may arise.
