Ukraine and EFTA Forge New Economic Pathways
In a significant move to bolster economic relations, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced the signing of a comprehensive free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) this Tuesday. This landmark deal introduces innovative chapters aimed at enhancing e-commerce, supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises, and streamlining trade processes.
Key Highlights of the Agreement
The agreement not only revises provisions on trade in goods and facilitates smoother government procurement but also opens up new market access opportunities. "This paves the way for deeper integration into European supply chains," emphasized Prime Minister Shmyhal, highlighting the strategic importance of this deal for Ukraine's economic future.
Trade Between Ukraine and EFTA
With trade volumes reaching nearly €1.1 billion last year, the economic partnership between Ukraine and EFTA members—Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland—is poised for growth. Ukraine's exports, notably fats and oils valued at €37 million, contrast with EFTA's exports of fish and seafood (€229 million), pharmaceutical products (€143 million), and arms and ammunition (€77 million), showcasing the diverse trade dynamics at play.
