EU Offers Zero-for-Zero Tariffs to US
In a bold move to reshape trade relations, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the EU's proposal of a "zero-for-zero" tariff agreement with the United States on industrial goods. This initiative aims to eliminate tariffs bilaterally, fostering a new era of trade cooperation.
Readiness to Negotiate and Protect Interests
Von der Leyen emphasized the EU's openness to negotiations for a "good deal" but also its preparedness to implement countermeasures if necessary. To safeguard against indirect tariff impacts, the EU plans to establish an "Import Surveillance Task Force," highlighting its commitment to protecting the bloc's economic interests.
Strengthening the Single Market and Diversifying Trade
The EU is not only focusing on the US but also aiming to enhance its single market and diversify trade partnerships. "We will focus, like a laser beam, on the 83% of global trade that is beyond the US," von der Leyen stated, outlining a strategic pivot towards broader global trade engagements.
