Brazil's President Lula Stands Firm Against US Tariffs, Vows to Protect National Sovereignty

Brazil's Defiant Stance Against US Tariffs

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva made a strong declaration on Thursday, promising to employ "all appropriate measures" to shield the nation from the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. This statement was made during an event celebrating his administration's two-year milestone, where Lula emphasized Brazil's unwavering commitment to sovereignty and fair trade practices.

"We do not give up our sovereignty," Lula asserted, highlighting Brazil's demand for mutual respect in international dealings. He openly criticized the US's protectionist policies and reaffirmed his resolve to counteract the 10% tariff on Brazilian exports. "We will defend our businesses and workers," he added, underlining the government's protective stance towards its economy.

Exploring Avenues for Resolution

The Brazilian government is considering all possible responses, including raising the issue with the World Trade Organization (WTO), as stated by the Foreign Ministry. The ministry labeled the US tariffs as a breach of WTO agreements but also expressed Brazil's willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with the US to resolve the dispute.
