March Marks Historic High for UK's Electric Vehicle Registrations Amid Overall Car Sales Surge

Record-Breaking Month for UK Car Registrations

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has announced a significant 12.4% annual increase in car registrations across the United Kingdom, reaching a total of 357,103 units in March.

Shift Towards Electric Vehicles

While traditional diesel and petrol vehicle registrations experienced declines of 10.1% and 0.4% respectively, electric vehicles (EVs) saw unprecedented growth. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) surged by 43.2%, 37.9%, and 27.7% compared to March 2024.

Electric Vehicles Lead the Charge

"March became the largest month ever for registrations of electric cars," highlighted the SMMT, with BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs reaching 69,313, 33,815, and 56,161 units respectively.

Year-to-Date Growth

Overall, the first quarter of the year saw a 6.4% increase in car registrations compared to the same period last year, totaling 580,502 units.
