Apple Slapped with a Hefty €150M Fine by France for Unfair App Tracking Transparency Practices

France's Competition Authority Takes a Stand Against Apple

In a landmark decision, France's Competition Authority has imposed a €150 million fine on Apple. The tech giant was found guilty of abusing its dominant position in the mobile application distribution sector for iOS and iPadOS devices from April 2021 to July 2023, specifically through its App Tracking Transparency (ATT) feature.

Questioning Apple's Methods

The regulator criticized Apple's implementation of the ATT, stating it was "neither necessary nor proportionate" to the company's claimed objective of protecting personal data. This policy mandates that iPhone or iPad users must consent to data collection by third-party applications within Apple's ecosystem, ostensibly to enhance privacy.

Impact on Third-Party Applications

According to the watchdog, Apple's approach unnecessarily complicated the user experience for third-party applications and skewed neutrality, disproportionately affecting smaller publishers.
