Surge in Supply Promises Lower Prices
Sanchai Puranachaikiri, president of the Thai Fresh Fruit Traders and Exporters Association, anticipates a 20% increase in durian supply from Thailand’s eastern provinces this year, with the main harvest commencing next month.
Quality Improvements Amid Price Drops
Paiboon Wongchotesathit, the association’s former president, forecasts the region’s supply will hit 800,000 tons, leading to a decrease in prices. "Consumers will benefit from cheaper durians that are of better quality," Paiboon remarked.
Seasonal Shifts and Production Growth
Thailand’s durian season peaks from April to July, transitioning from the eastern region to the south. The Thai Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry projects a 37% year-on-year increase in durian production, totaling 1.76 million tons this year.
Recovery from Last Year’s Heatwave
Last year’s harvest suffered due to a severe heatwave across Southeast Asia, causing durians to ripen prematurely and reducing their market value. This year, farmers plan to stagger the harvest in four to five batches to ensure quality and manage supply.
Ensuring Perfect Ripeness for Consumers
Paiboon assures that this season, consumers can look forward to enjoying durians at their peak ripeness, thanks to adjusted harvesting strategies.
