Thailand's Durian Exports Face Challenges as China Intensifies Quality Inspections

Thailand's Durian Export Dynamics

Last year, Thailand exported 859,183 tons of durian worth US$3.75 billion to China, marking a 13% decrease in volume and a 9% drop in value compared to 2023. Despite this, China's overall fruit imports grew by 4.1%, reaching a record 15.6 million tons valued at $6.99 billion.

Market Share Shifts

Thailand's dominance in the Chinese durian market has slightly waned, with its share decreasing from 68% in 2023 to 57%. Conversely, Vietnam's market share increased from 33% to 41.5%, intensifying competition.

Quality Improvement Measures

In response to China's stricter quality standards, including tests for harmful substances like basic yellow 2, Thailand has initiated comprehensive quality control measures. These include sanitation of warehouses and tighter controls from harvesting to transportation.

Promotional Efforts

To bolster exports, Thailand is enhancing its online sales strategies in China through collaborations with social media influencers and campaigns like "Thai Fruit Golden Month," aiming to capitalize on the peak season.

Emerging Competitors

Other Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia and the Philippines are making inroads into the Chinese durian market, with Malaysia's premium varieties fetching higher prices.
