Indian Railways Embraces Nuclear Power for a Greener Future by 2030

Indian Railways' Bold Move Towards Net Zero Emissions

In an ambitious stride towards sustainability, Indian Railways has initiated discussions with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the power ministry to establish small nuclear power facilities. This initiative is a cornerstone in their strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2030. Officials reveal that while Indian Railways will provide land and ensure power consumption, DAE and the power ministry will facilitate plant establishment and fuel supply agreements.

"Discussions have begun…This would help railways achieve net zero swiftly," a senior official stated. The national transporter aims to meet its 10 GW traction requirement by the end of the decade through these facilities.

Renewable Energy and Nuclear Power: A Dual Strategy

Indian Railways plans to purchase 3 GW of renewable energy, including hydropower, alongside 3 GW of thermal and nuclear power by 2030. The additional 4 GW needed for traction will be sourced through arrangements with power distribution companies. Land availability is not a concern, and site identification has already commenced.

Funding and Future Prospects

Public sector financing arms under Indian Railways will provide the necessary funding for these projects, with the Indian Railways Finance Corporation (IRFC) expected to play a key role in securing finances. This renewed focus on nuclear power follows the announcement of a Rs 20,000 crore Nuclear Energy Mission in the recent budget, aiming to implement at least five domestically developed Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by 2033.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed ongoing discussions with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and the power ministry for nuclear power allocation to the railway system, highlighting the steadily increasing power demands of Indian Railways.
