Germany's Trade Surplus Sees a Notable Decline

In a recent report released by the Federal Statistical Office Destatis, Germany's trade surplus for January was recorded at €16 billion. This marks a decrease from December's €20.7 billion and a significant drop from January 2024's €25.3 billion, falling below market expectations.

Export and Import Figures

Adjusted for calendar and seasonal variations, Germany's goods exports amounted to €129.2 billion, witnessing a 2.5% decrease month-on-month and a slight 0.1% decline year-on-year. On the other hand, imports rose to €113.1 billion, showing a 1.2% increase from the previous month and an 8.7% surge compared to the same period last year.

Trade with EU and Non-EU Countries

Exports to other European Union member states saw a 4.2% monthly drop, totaling €69.8 billion, while imports decreased by 1.1% to €57 billion. In contrast, exports to non-EU countries experienced a minor 0.4% fall to €59.4 billion, with imports climbing by 3.7% to €56.1 billion.
