Revolutionizing Social Development Through AI
Sunil Wadhwani, a renowned Indian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist, alongside his brother Romesh Wadhwani, has been a pioneer in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for social good. Recognized in the prestigious Time100 AI list in 2023, Wadhwani's journey into AI was driven by a vision to accelerate social development for underserved communities. "We felt that AI could be transformative in accelerating social development for underserved communities," Wadhwani shared in an exclusive interview with the Times of India.

Wadhwani AI: A Beacon of Hope
Launched in 2018 with an initial investment of $30 million, Wadhwani AI is an independent, non-profit institute based in India. It focuses on developing AI solutions for sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture, in partnership with governments across the global south. With over 300 professionals and more than 25 solutions developed, Wadhwani AI is making significant strides in areas such as tuberculosis detection, maternal and child health, disease surveillance, and agricultural management.
Challenges and Future Directions
Despite the progress, Wadhwani acknowledges the challenges in scaling AI solutions for social impact. "The biggest challenge of working in the social sector is not about finding the right technical solution but about actually deploying and scaling it," he noted. Wadhwani believes in the power of collaboration with governments and like-minded individuals to overcome these hurdles and is optimistic about India's potential to emerge as a global leader in applying AI for social development.
