Meta and UNESCO Collaborate to Revolutionize AI Translation for Underrepresented Languages

Breaking New Ground in AI Translation

Meta Platforms Inc., in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has embarked on an ambitious project to develop advanced machine intelligence (AMI). This initiative aims to leverage human reasoning for tasks such as translation, with a special focus on languages that are currently underserved by existing artificial intelligence models.

Call for Collaboration

Meta is actively seeking partners for its Language Technology Partner Program. The program invites contributions of over 10 hours of speech recordings, transcriptions, and written texts comprising more than 200 sentences. Additionally, sets of sentences translated into various languages are required. This linguistic material will be integrated into AI models for speech recognition and machine translation, which will then be open-sourced and made freely available to the public.

Open-Source Benchmark for Machine Translation

In a parallel development, Meta announced the launch of an open-source benchmark for machine translation. This benchmark is designed to evaluate AI translation models and will be accessible in seven languages, further promoting the development and accessibility of translation technologies.
