
Employment Growth in January
The United States witnessed an addition of 143,000 jobs to its nonfarm payrolls in January, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This figure, although positive, fell short of expectations, sparking discussions on the current state of the economy.
Sector-wise Job Additions
Leading the charge in job creation was the healthcare sector, which added 44,000 jobs. Retail trade and social assistance followed, contributing 34,000 and 22,000 jobs respectively, showcasing a diversified employment growth across different sectors.
Unemployment and Earnings
The unemployment rate saw a slight decrease from 4.1% in December to 4% in January, with the total number of unemployed individuals standing at 6.8 million. Meanwhile, the labor participation rate remained steady at 62.6%. On the earnings front, average hourly earnings for private nonfarm payroll employees increased by 17 cents to $35.87, and the average workweek edged up by 0.1 hours to 34.1 hours.
