According to OAG, a UK-based aviation data firm, the Hong Kong (HKG) to Taipei (TPE) route emerged as the busiest international airline route in 2024, boasting 6.8 million seats. This marks a significant recovery and growth, with a 48% increase in capacity compared to the previous year, yet it remains 15% below the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.
Asia Pacific's Aviation Boom
The Asia Pacific region has seen substantial growth in airline routes in 2024, with the HKG - TPE route showing the most significant surge. This growth is part of the region's continued post-pandemic recovery.
Top Busiest International Routes
Following closely, the Cairo (CAI) to Jeddah (JED) route secured the second position with 5.5 million seats, witnessing a 14% increase from 2023 and a 62% rise compared to 2019. The Seoul Incheon (ICN) to Tokyo Narita (NRT) route took the third spot with 5.4 million seats, showing a 30% increase from 2023 and a 68% surge from 2019 levels.
Domestic Routes Holding Strong
On the domestic front, the Jeju (CJU) to Seoul (GMP) route maintained its position as the busiest globally with 14.2 million seats, indicating a 3% growth from 2023 but still 19% below 2019 levels. The Asia region dominates the top busiest domestic routes, with key routes in South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, India, and China.
