Federal Reviews Initiated
Elon Musk and his company, SpaceX, are currently facing at least three federal reviews regarding their compliance with federal reporting rules designed to safeguard national security, according to a recent report by the New York Times.
Involved Federal Agencies
The reviews have been initiated by the Air Force, the Defense Department's inspector general, and the undersecretary of defense for intelligence and security. The New York Times cited eight individuals with knowledge of the rocket company and internal documents for this information.
Alleged Non-Compliance
The Times report suggests that "Elon Musk and his rocket company, SpaceX, have repeatedly failed to comply with federal reporting protocols aimed at protecting state secrets, including by not providing some details of his meetings with foreign leaders."
Security Access Denial
The Air Force recently cited potential security risks in denying Musk high-level security access. Additionally, allies including Israel have expressed concerns that he could potentially share sensitive data.
Calls with Russian Officials
Last month, two Democratic U.S. senators, Jeanne Shaheen and Jack Reed, called for an investigation into reports that billionaire Elon Musk has held multiple calls with Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, on national security grounds.
Air Force Secretary's Response
Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall responded to Shaheen, expressing shared concerns but stating that he could not comment on the status of an individual's security clearance.
