Google Mandates Hybrid Work Model: Remote Employees Must Return to Office 3 Days a Week or Face Job Cuts

Google's New Policy Sparks Concern Among Remote Workers

In a significant shift, Google has announced that certain remote employees must now adhere to a hybrid work model, requiring them to be in the office three days a week to retain their positions. This move comes as part of the company's broader strategy to reduce its workforce, with remote workers being particularly affected.

Internal Documents Reveal Stricter Measures

According to internal documents obtained by CNBC, several divisions within Google have issued warnings to their remote staff. Employees who had previously been approved for remote work are now being told that their jobs are at risk unless they comply with the new hybrid arrangement. The policy mandates attendance at the nearest office location, leaving no room for exceptions.

Voluntary Buyouts Offered as an Alternative

Earlier in 2025, Google began offering voluntary buyout packages to some of its US-based full-time employees. For remote workers, this option was presented as the only alternative to accepting the three-day office requirement. This policy adjustment has contributed to a noticeable reduction in Google's workforce, which decreased from around 190,000 to 183,000 employees over a two-year period ending in late 2024.
