South Korea and U.S. Set for Crucial Trade Talks
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Choi Sang-mok, alongside Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Deok-geun, have initiated pivotal discussions aimed at addressing trade tensions between South Korea and the United States. These talks are critical as South Korea faces a significant decline in exports to the U.S., prompting urgent negotiations for tariff relief.

Focus on Automotive and Steel Sectors
Minister Ahn highlighted the severe impact of the 25% tariff on South Korea's automotive and steel exports, with passenger car exports dropping by 6.5% and steel exports by 8.7%. He emphasized the need for swift solutions to mitigate these damages during the upcoming 2+2 tariff consultations in Washington, D.C.
Strategic Negotiations Ahead
South Korea plans to leverage its cooperation in LNG imports, shipbuilding, and the Alaska gas development project as bargaining chips in negotiations. However, the U.S. appears to be seeking a broader agreement, potentially tying trade concessions to increased South Korean contributions to defense cost-sharing for U.S. forces stationed in Korea.
Recent data from the Korea Customs Service underscores the urgency of these talks, revealing a 14.3% decrease in Korea's exports to the U.S. in early April compared to the previous year.
