Malaysian NGO Supports Crackdown on Illegal Durian Farms: Over 1,000 Trees Cut Down Sparks Debate

Support for Environmental Conservation

The Pahang Social Action Council has voiced its full support for "Op Sekat," a state-led initiative aimed at removing durian plantations from unlawfully occupied land. This operation has resulted in the cutting down of over 1,000 trees, including the highly valued Musang King variety.

Community and NGO Backing

The council's petition highlights the importance of protecting forest reserves and conservation areas in Raub, advocating for legal action against land encroachers and stricter enforcement of conservation laws. The initiative has received widespread support from local residents and other NGOs, with peaceful demonstrations held in Raub to show solidarity with the government's actions.

Controversy and Opposition

However, the operation has not been without its critics. The Save Musang King Alliance, representing unlicensed durian farmers, has expressed dismay over the destruction of trees that took decades to cultivate. The alliance has gathered signatures in protest, claiming the operation violates a court order issued last May.

Government's Stance

The Pahang government maintains that no laws have been broken, asserting its authority to clear the 200 hectares of contested land. The operation, a collaborative effort with the police and state enforcement, is scheduled to continue until May 3.
