EU Announces Trade Countermeasures Against US
In a decisive move, the European Commission revealed that all member states have unanimously approved the imposition of trade countermeasures targeting the United States. This action will impact €21 billion worth of US imports, with tariffs set to take effect on April 15.
EU Criticizes US Tariffs as Unjustified
The European Union has publicly condemned the US tariffs, labeling them as "unjustified and damaging." The bloc emphasized the negative repercussions for both economies and the global market, while also expressing a strong desire for a negotiated resolution that benefits all parties involved.
Staged Implementation and Product Exclusions
The tariffs will be rolled out in phases, with additional increments scheduled for mid-May and December 1. Products will face varying tax rates, with some subjected to a 25% duty and others to a 10% levy. Notably, Bourbon whiskey has been exempted from the list to prevent escalating tensions with a potential 200% US tariff on EU alcohol. The EU has indicated that these measures can be withdrawn if a "fair and balanced" agreement is reached with the US.
