Amid Rising Tensions, Japan's Mimura Calls for US to Lift Punitive Tariffs on Japanese Goods

Japan Urges US to Reconsider Tariffs Amid Market Volatility

Japan's top currency diplomat, Masato Kanda Mimura, has voiced concerns over the recent instability in financial markets, attributing it to the United States' decision to impose global tariffs, which include a 24% levy on Japanese goods. A pivotal meeting was convened on Wednesday to address these pressing issues.

In a press briefing, Mimura emphasized Japan's stance, stating the country would "strongly urge" the US to exempt Japan from these tariffs. He highlighted the necessity for currency movements to reflect economic fundamentals and confirmed ongoing dialogues with the US Treasury to foster cooperation during these uncertain times.

Adding to the diplomatic efforts, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has agreed to initiate trade negotiations with Washington, marking a critical step towards resolving the tariff dispute.
