ASEAN Urged to Forge Ahead with Bold Economic Integration Amidst Global Trade War Fears

ASEAN's Call to Action Against Trade War Chaos

In a bold statement at the ASEAN Investment Conference 2025 in Malaysia, Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn emphasized the urgent need for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to accelerate regional economic integration. This move is seen as a critical step to navigate the turbulent waters of a global trade war, sparked by sweeping United States tariffs.

"To remain relevant and resilient in a world where economic chaos is fast becoming the new normal, we must act boldly, decisively, and together to reaffirm ASEAN’s commitment to a stable, predictable, and business-friendly environment," Kao urged the delegates.

Diplomacy Over Retaliation

Highlighting a preference for diplomacy over confrontation, ASEAN member states have largely refrained from retaliatory measures against Washington. Vietnam, for instance, has taken a proactive step by agreeing to reduce its tariffs on US goods to zero, showcasing the bloc's commitment to fostering a harmonious global trade environment.
