EU Announces Countermeasures to US Tariffs
European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maros Sefcovic, has confirmed that the European Union will implement its first package of countermeasures against United States tariffs on April 15. A decisive vote on these measures is scheduled for April 9, with a second phase expected to follow on May 15. Sefcovic emphasized the urgency of the EU's response, highlighting the unity among trade ministers from all member states during a recent meeting.
Strategic Response to Protect EU Exports
With US tariffs affecting approximately 70% of EU exports, valued at €380 billion, the EU is carefully crafting its response. Sefcovic clarified that the union is not aiming for a tit-for-tat approach but is considering all available options. The Commission plans to engage with stakeholders and member states to explore every possible instrument to safeguard the EU's interests. Additionally, Sefcovic reaffirmed the EU's commitment to maintaining the current value-added tax (VAT) system, countering the US administration's view of it as a barrier to American exports.
