The UK automotive market witnessed a significant upturn in March, with car registrations climbing by 12.4% year-on-year to reach an impressive 357,103 units, as reported by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Shift Towards Electric Vehicles
While traditional petrol and diesel vehicles saw a decline, the electric vehicle sector experienced unprecedented growth. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) surged by 43.2%, 37.9%, and 27.7% respectively, marking March as the largest month ever for electric car registrations.
Year-to-Date Growth
Overall, the first quarter of the year saw a 6.4% increase in car registrations compared to the same period last year, totaling 580,502 units, signaling a robust start to the year for the UK automotive industry.
