In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee To Lam held a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on April 4, 2025. The discussion was attended by key Vietnamese officials, including Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Trade and Economic Cooperation

The conversation highlighted the fruitful development of trade ties, with discussions on reducing import taxes to 0% for goods exchanged between the two countries. Vietnam also expressed its readiness to increase imports of U.S. goods and facilitate American investments in the country.

Future Collaborations

The leaders agreed to further discussions to formalize their commitments through a bilateral agreement. Additionally, General Secretary Lam extended an invitation to President Trump for a future visit to Vietnam, which was warmly accepted.

This dialogue comes shortly after President Trump announced plans to impose a 46% tariff on Vietnamese imports, underscoring the importance of these talks in addressing trade concerns.
