UK Car Registrations See Significant Growth
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported a remarkable 12.4% increase in car registrations across the United Kingdom in March, totaling 357,103 units. This surge highlights a shifting preference among UK drivers, with electric vehicles (EVs) taking the lead.
Shift Towards Electric Vehicles
While traditional diesel and petrol vehicle registrations experienced declines of 10.1% and 0.4% respectively, electric vehicles, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), saw unprecedented growth. BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs registrations skyrocketed by 43.2%, 37.9%, and 27.7% compared to March 2024, marking March as the largest month ever for electric car registrations.
Year-to-Date Performance
From the beginning of the year to March, total car registrations in the UK have jumped by 6.4% compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 580,502 units. This growth underscores the accelerating transition towards more sustainable transportation options in the UK.
