Meta Partners with UNESCO to Revolutionize AI Translation for Underserved Languages

Breaking New Ground in AI Translation

Meta Platforms Inc. has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Together, they aim to develop advanced machine intelligence (AMI) capable of utilizing human reasoning for tasks such as translation. This initiative focuses on enhancing AI models to better support languages that are currently underserved in the realm of artificial intelligence.

Calling for Global Participation

In an effort to enrich its AI models, Meta is inviting partners to join its Language Technology Partner Program. Participants are encouraged to contribute a minimum of 10 hours of speech recordings, along with transcriptions, over 200 sentences of written text, and sets of sentences translated into various languages. These contributions will be integrated into AI models for speech recognition and machine translation, with the resulting technology being open sourced and freely accessible to all.

Setting New Standards with Open Source Benchmark

Furthering its commitment to advancing AI translation, Meta has also unveiled an open-source benchmark for machine translation. This benchmark is designed to evaluate the performance of AI translation models and will be made available in seven languages, setting a new standard for the industry.
