January Sees a Spike in US Job Cuts to 49,795, Tech Sector Hit Hardest

US Job Market Faces Challenges in January

According to the latest report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., the United States witnessed a significant rise in job cuts, reaching 49,795 in January. This marks an increase from December's 38,792 but is notably 39.5% lower than the figures from January 2024.

Tech Sector Takes the Biggest Hit

The technology sector experienced the most substantial impact, with job cuts surging by 128% month-on-month to 7,488. This spike is largely attributed to the integration of artificial intelligence, reshaping the workforce landscape.

Retail and Services Also Affected

Following the tech sector, the retail industry faced 6,419 job cuts, with the services sector not far behind at 4,930. Meanwhile, US employers announced plans to hire 6,089 workers in January, a 24% decrease from December.

"January was relatively quiet in terms of job cut announcements. However, we’ve already seen major announcements in the early days of February, so it seems this quiet is unlikely to last," noted Andrew Challenger, Senior Vice President at Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
