Mexico Strikes Back: Implements Tariff and Non-Tariff Measures Against US

Mexico's Response to US Tariffs

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced decisive actions against the United States' imposition of a 25% tariff on Mexican imports. Sheinbaum declared, "We categorically reject the slander made by the White House against the Government of Mexico regarding alleged alliances with criminal organizations." She emphasized that Mexico would defend its interests through both tariff and non-tariff measures as part of its "plan B."

Allegations and Counterclaims

Sheinbaum also addressed the White House's claims by highlighting the United States' role in the arms trade with criminal groups. "If such an alliance exists anywhere, it is in the arms depots of the United States, which sell high-powered weapons to these criminal groups," she stated, referencing a US Department of Justice report from January.

US Stance on Tariffs

The White House justified the tariffs as a means to pressure Mexico into greater cooperation in combating drug trafficking. This move has sparked a significant diplomatic and economic response from Mexico, aiming to protect its national interests and sovereignty.
