India's Nuclear Energy Vision Takes a Giant Leap Forward
In a groundbreaking announcement during the Union Budget 2025 presentation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed an ambitious Nuclear Energy Mission. With a staggering allocation of Rs 20,000 crore, this initiative aims to propel India into a new era of energy independence and technological prowess.

Revolutionizing Energy with Small Modular Reactors
The mission's cornerstone is the development of small modular reactors (SMRs), with plans to operationalize at least five indigenously developed reactors by 2033. This move not only underscores India's commitment to sustainable energy but also positions the nation as a global leader in nuclear technology.
Legislative Reforms and Research Fellowships
To facilitate this vision, amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act are on the horizon. Furthermore, the government is set to offer 10,000 fellowships over the next five years for technology research at premier institutions like the IITs and IISc, nurturing the next generation of innovators.
Expanding India's Nuclear Power Capacity
This announcement builds on the government's February 2024 decision to add 18 more nuclear power reactors, aiming for a total atomic power capacity of 22,480 MWe by 2031-32. The National Spatial Mission and Gyaan Bharat Mission also received nods, focusing on conserving India's manuscript heritage and spatial data management.
