In a move to strengthen national security and modernize its armed forces, the Indian government has announced a defence budget of Rs 6.81 lakh crore for the fiscal year 2025. This marks a notable increase of over 9% from the previous year's allocation, underscoring the country's commitment to enhancing its defence capabilities.

Allocation Details

Of the total budget, Rs 4.88 lakh crore is designated for revenue expenditure, covering salaries, operational costs, and maintenance. Meanwhile, Rs 1.92 lakh crore is allocated for capital expenditure, focusing on the procurement of new equipment, modernization efforts, and infrastructure development. Defence pensions have been allocated Rs 1.60 lakh crore, reflecting the government's attention to the welfare of retired military personnel.

Strategic Investments

Significant investments are planned in the aviation and naval sectors, with Rs 48,614 crore set aside for aircraft and aero engines, and Rs 24,390 crore earmarked for the naval fleet. These allocations aim to bolster India's strategic capabilities and ensure a robust defence posture.

Broader Economic Measures

Beyond defence, the budget introduces measures to stimulate economic growth, including tax exemptions for incomes up to Rs 12 lakh and new schemes to tackle unemployment and boost agricultural productivity. These initiatives reflect the government's holistic approach to national development and security.
