New Delhi: A Health-Conscious Shift in Beer Preferences
In a significant shift towards healthier lifestyles, Gen Z and millennial consumers are increasingly turning to low-alcohol and no-alcohol beers. This trend is driven by a growing focus on health and the desire for moderation, marking a dramatic change in the beer market landscape.
While the market for these beverages is still in its infancy, with only a few leading companies, industry experts predict a significant growth in the coming years. The global trend towards moderation is gaining momentum, with no-alcohol brands seeing a surge in popularity.
Consumer Demand Drives Innovation
"There is a steady rise in demand for alcohol-free/low-alcohol beers, especially in metros and large cities where there is a heightened awareness against drinking and driving," said Vinod Giri, Director General of the Brewers Association of India. He emphasized that consumers are looking for low or no alcohol beer options that do not compromise on the distinctive taste of beer, pushing companies to innovate and develop products that meet these demands.
Key brands leading this segment include Budweiser 0.0, Bavaria, Heineken 0.0, and Coolberg. Vikram Bahl, CMO of United Breweries, highlighted the company's commitment to growing its non-alcoholic offerings, including Heineken 0.0, reflecting the global trend towards moderation.
Market Growth and Future Prospects
The beer market in India has seen a 6.5% volume and 7.4% value growth in 2024, with premium beers growing at more than double the rate of overall beer sales. The International Wine and Spirits Record (IWSR) predicts a recovery in the global beverage alcohol market by 2025, with India, China, and the US leading the value growth.
