FSSAI Mandates Patanjali to Withdraw Contaminated Chilli Powder Batch

FSSAI Directs Recall of Patanjali's Chilli Powder

In a significant move, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered Patanjali Foods to recall a specific batch of red chilli powder. This decision comes after the product was found to be non-compliant with regulations concerning contaminants, toxins, and residues. The company, led by Baba Ramdev, has yet to provide a comprehensive statement on the issue.

Impact on Patanjali Foods

Patanjali Foods, a key player in the FMCG sector, offers a wide range of products including edible oils, biscuits, noodles, and sugar. Despite this setback, the company reported a 21% increase in standalone net profit, reaching Rs 309 crore in the September quarter, with total income rising to Rs 8,199 crore.

Industry-Wide Scrutiny

The domestic spice industry has been under the microscope, especially after the suspension of sales of certain products by MDH and Everest in Hong Kong and Singapore. These products were allegedly found to contain high levels of a cancer-causing pesticide. The government has since initiated inspections to ensure compliance with quality standards.

Future Endeavors

Amidst these challenges, Patanjali Foods is looking to expand its operations by setting up an oil palm mill in Mizoram. Company executives have already met with Chief Minister Lalduhoma to discuss this initiative.
