Amazon Announces Closure of Quebec Operations, Impacting Nearly 2,000 Jobs

Amazon to Shut Down Quebec Facilities

In a significant move, Amazon.com Inc has declared it will cease its operations in Quebec within the next two months. This decision affects seven facilities, including a fulfillment center, sorting centers, and delivery stations, leading to the displacement of 1,950 workers. Barbara Agrait, an Amazon spokesperson, confirmed the news to CTV News, stating that the company will provide severance packages and transitional benefits to the affected employees.

Impact on Employees

Among the affected, 1,700 are regular employees, and 250 are seasonal workers. Agrait emphasized that the decision is not linked to unionization efforts. The company has committed to offering severance packages that include 14 weeks of pay, along with job placement support. Seasonal workers will be compensated until their contracts conclude.

Transition to a Third-Party Model

Amazon plans to revert to a third-party model in Quebec, supported by small local businesses. Agrait mentioned that this model was previously in place until 2020 and believes it will allow Amazon to continue providing excellent service to its customers. This strategic shift underscores Amazon's commitment to adapting its operations to better serve the Quebec market while supporting local businesses.
